Hydration and UV Safety
There are a lot of fun activities to do outside when the weather is warm. Being outdoors can be great for your physical and mental health. To enjoy your time outside safely, it's important to take some precautions to prevent dehydration and lower your risk of skin cancer from sun exposure. Here are some tips to help keep you safe while you're having fun outdoors:
|
• |
Limit Sun Exposure: The sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, stay in the shade during these hours. |
• |
Wear Protective Clothing: Long-sleeved shirts and pants provide the best protection. Opt for a hat with a 2-3 inch brim and UV-blocking sunglasses. |
• |
Apply Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Higher SPF offers more protection, but no sunscreen is completely effective. Be sure to reapply every two hours. |
• |
Stay Hydrated: Drink 8 ounces of water every 20 minutes while you are outdoors. |
• |
Watch for Heat Exhaustion: Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, headache, muscle cramps, and rapid pulse. If you or someone else experiences these symptoms, move to a cooler place and drink cool water or a sports drink. Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or don't improve within an hour. |
